Ill. Gov. Quinn To Decide on Tanning Ban For Minors

SPRINGFIELD, IL (IRN) – An ultraviolet suntan is unhealthy, according to cancer experts.

“It’s a known carcinogen,” says Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), who sponsored a bill barring tanning facilities from allowing minors from using their beds. “It’s a Class One carcinogen.”

The House sponsor says the bill is not an example of government overreach. “I think the government also knows better than Mom and Dad on cigarettes,” says State Rep. Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston), “It’s the same kind of cancer-causing substance.” Gabel adds the legislation does not allow even a note from a parent to get a child under eighteen into a tanning bed.

“Many parents have thanked me,” says Gabel, adding the law would supersede arguments with parents.

HB 188 has passed the Senate, 34-12, and goes to the governor.
