SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – A key Illinois House committee has approved an expansion of Medicaid to cover low-income adults who don’t have children at home, despite scrutiny over a last-minute amendment that would give flexibility to some institutions for people with mental illness. (SB26)

The Human Services Committee voted 8-6 in favor Tuesday, sending it to the floor. The state Senate has approved the expansion and Gov. Pat Quinn supports it.

Expanding Medicaid is a key part of President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Democratic State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz is a sponsor. She says it’s a historic move for Illinois and will help an estimated 340,000 people. But Republican Rep. Patti Bellock voted against it saying she has concerns about future costs, particularly with Illinois’ financial troubles.
