CHESTERFIELD, MO (KMOX) - Word spreads quickly from Missouri to California.
Less than 24 hours after news reports began telling the tale of a Marine sergeant’s Silver Star and other military keepsakes turning up in a Chesterfield thrift store drop-off, the deceased man’s daughter has stepped forward.
MERS Goodwill President Lew Chartock says the medals are priceless to Michelle McKenzie who grew up in the St. Louis area but now lives out west.
“Tremendous interest from military museums and collectors and so on and so forth in having this but of course it’s all going back to the daughter and she’s delighted,” he said. “She said it would mean everything to her to have this.”
McKenzie is the daughter of World War II veteran James Joseph McKenzie. Arrangements are being made to get the shadow box containing the keepsakes to her.
“If you saw this on Antique Road Show they would say ‘wow,’” Chartock said, “because it’s rare that everything is together; the citation for his Silver Star, the different medals, the combat ribbons.”
