ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — Saturday marked the 45th anniversary of the Gateway Arch’s dedication, and ironically, rain showers damped that day too.
“It really does give our city a lot of identity internationally,” said St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay at the dedication. “People see the Arch and they think St. Louis. People think of St. Louis and they can envision the Arch.”
Slay said the national monument looks great at 45, and by this summer work will begin on giving the Arch grounds a makeover.
“I’m really excited about the opportunities for the City Arch River 2015 with the new improvements were going to see,” said Slay.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey spoke at the dedication of the Arch back in 1968.
He called it, “a soaring curve in the sky that links the rich heritage of yesterday with the richer future of tomorrow.”
