EAST ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – An East St. Louis man has been charged with last week’s smash and grab robbery in Cahokia.
Alford Benford Jr., 50-year-old male, was charged by the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office for burglary, which will be a class 2 felony, and bond is set at $100,000.
Police are now trying to determine if Benford is linked to similar burglaries on the Missouri side of the river.
“The common link is that they used a vehicle and they crashed the doors,” says Cahokia Police Lt. Dennis Plew.
Plew met with St. Louis City and County detectives to share information about the multiple smash and grab burglaries.
“They laid the tarp out and they started throwing cartons of cigarettes, bottles of alcohol and candy into the tarp,” Plew says, “and then they drug it out.”
Police say Benford and two others drove a pick-up into the Midwest Petroleum at 2201 Camp Jackson on May 23. Benford refuses to say anything about his accomplices.
Benford was on parole after being released from prison in March for a previous theft conviction.
