SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – The Illinois Republican Party is naming a new leader less than a month after post-election infighting led to the resignation of its chairman.

Republican state committeeman and lobbyist Jack Dorgan of Rosemont was voted in Saturday by party officials at a meeting in Springfield.

Dorgan is considered a consensus candidate who can bring the conservative and moderate wings of the party together after its poor showing in last November’s elections.

Pat Brady resigned as chairman last month after conservatives complained about his support for gay marriage and other leadership issues. GOP leaders are seeking to appeal more to youth, women and minorities.

Dorgan was backed by U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, Illinois House Republican Leader Tom Cross and state Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka. His term will expire in April of 2014.
