ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — The Cardinals announced Wednesday that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Maikel Cleto from Memphis (AAA). Right-handed reliever Victor Marte was optioned to Memphis following last night’s 14-inning loss to the Diamondbacks.

Cleto, 24, has been used as a starter at Memphis since May 2, going 2-1 with a 2.97 ERA in six games started (30.1 IP), limiting the opposition to a .181 batting average. He has posted an overall season mark of 2-2, 5.67 ERA in 13 games for the triple-A Redbirds, striking out 39 batters in 39.2 innings pitched.

The 6-3, 250-pound Cleto (pronounced: Michael CLAY-toe), has appeared in 12 games at the major league level with St. Louis between 2011 and 2012, including nine games in relief last season.

Cleto will wear uniform no. 63.
