ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis head men’s basketball coach Jim Crews announced today that the Billikens have added Villanova transfer Achraf “Ash” Yacoubou (Bronx, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) to the roster. Yacoubou must sit out the 2013-14 season due to NCAA transfer rules before beginning two years of eligibility in 2014-15.

“Ash is a high-character, high-motor young man who has been coached at a high level during his prep career and in college,” Crews said. “We are excited to get to work with Ash, and with a year of hard work we think he will step in and contribute right away in 2014-15.”

Yacoubou (Ya-coo-boo), a 6-foot-4 guard, was the 2011 Gatorade New York State Player of the Year coming out of Long Island Lutheran. As a senior, he averaged 19.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg. Yacoubou helped the Crusaders capture the Class A Federation state title as a sophomore.

At Villanova, Yacoubou appeared in 57 games, including three starts his freshman season in 2011-12. This past season, he led the Wildcats in 3-point shooting percentage, nailing 39.6 percent (21-53) of his shots from beyond the arc. Yacoubou registered a career-high 13 points in a win against Penn and followed with nine points and seven boards against Saint Joseph’s. His 3-pointer late in the game against Louisville helped propel the Wildcats to a nine-point victory against the eventual national champions.

As a freshman at Villanova, Yacoubou scored 2.2 ppg while appearing in 26 games. He played eight minutes against the Billikens at the 76 Classic in Anaheim.

Yacoubou is the fourth member of the Billikens’ newcomer class. The class is as follows:

Reggie Agbeko, F, 6-8, Buffalo, N.Y. (South Kent School)

Mike Crawford, G/F, 6-5, Tipton, Ind. (Tipton)

Tanner Lancona, F, 6-8, Trabuco Canyon, Calif. (Tesoro)

Achraf Yacoubou, G, 6-4, Bronx, N.Y. (Long Island Lutheran)
