ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A St. Louis police officer was hospitalized Tuesday night after his police car was struck by another car, filled with people who had been shooting at other officers.

Shots were fired at Evans and Whittier and the officers who had been shot at took chase.

The officer whose car was hit was on his way to help. The cars crashed at the intersection of Washington and Compton.

The officer, 35, was in serious but stable condition overnight. He has since been released.

Two suspects were also hurt and a third escaped. Investigators say they recovered a gun from their car.

Police say the story took another twist when early this morning the injured male suspect walked out of the hospital and got into a car which drove off into the early morning darkness. He remains on the run.
