O’FALLON, Ill. (KMOX) — If you’re wondering why you’re seeing so many flags around, today is Flag Day. Some communities like O’Fallon, Illinois post flags along their main roads in town and businesses and homeowners are encouraged to do the same.
The push to create an annual observance of the birth of the United States flag began in June 1886 when Bernard Cigrand wrote an article called, “The Fourteenth of June,” in the old Chicago Argus newspaper.
It would take President Woodrow Wilson though to issue a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance of the event on June 14, 1916. But Flag Day still did not become official until 1949 when President Harry Truman signed the legislation and proclaimed June 14th as Flag Day.
