Former U of I Student Accused of Hacking Dorm Computers
URBANA, Ill. (AP)- University of Illinois police say a former student convicted of computer fraud also downloaded up to 3,000 Social Security numbers belonging to residents of a campus dormitory.
Police Capt. Roy Acree said Thursday that 22-year-old Daniel Beckwitt downloaded information that included the Social Security numbers of students who lived in the Hendrick House residence hall during a break-in during the 2011-12 school year.
Detective James Carter told The News-Gazette in Champaign (http://bit.ly/12fJTvv ) that police don’t believe the numbers were used for anything and no new charges are expected.
Beckwitt was sentenced this month to 24 months of probation after he pleaded guilty to computer fraud for tampering with campus email accounts and installing devices on keyboards that log users’ key strokes.
Residents whose data was accessed are being notified.
