Big Turnout Expected At Illinois’ Largest Gay Pride Parade

CHICAGO (AP) – Supporters of a measure to legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois say they will be out in force during Chicago’s Pride Parade.

The annual event is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

In a statement Saturday, a coalition of supporters known as Illinois Unites for Marriage said they will bring a diverse, statewide group to the event. They will carry signs and have volunteers walking the route, asking spectators to contact their legislators and get involved in the effort.

The Illinois Senate approved legislation in February that would legalize same-sex marriage. But the House adjourned last month without voting on the measure, after sponsor Rep. Greg Harris said he didn’t have the votes for it to pass.

Opponents of the legislation say marriage should be between a man and a woman.
