SLU Surgery Uses Fat Grafting For Breast Reconstruction

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – There’s good news for women who have to undergo reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy.

Plastic surgeons at Saint Louis University Hospital are now using fat grafting to aid in breast reconstruction in a much quicker way.

Dr. Bruce Kraemer says he is removing fat from the patient’s abdomen through liposuction, cleaning it of blood and oil immediately, and inserting it back into the patient for cosmetic purposes.

“To do that, we have a nice device that can rapidly collect quite a bit of fat and clean it and get it back in the patient,” he explained. “There seems to be enhanced survival of grafting larger amounts for people with this new technique.”

Kraemer says this also means a more natural look in almost all cases.
