Marijuana Lobbyist gets Go Ahead from Chief Dotson

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The St. Louis Police Sergeant, who lobbies for lesser penalties for small amounts of marijuana, has been given permission from Police Chief Sam Dotson to continue his lobbying in Jefferson City.

Attorney for Sgt. Gary Wiegert, Al Watkins, says Sgt. Wiegert’s intention was never to make marijuana legal…but instead issue simple citations for small amounts.

He says, in effect, the city is already doing that. In his letter to Sgt. Wiegert, Chief Dotson wrote “Your proposed request for secondary employment as a lobbyist will be allowed.”

The chief however did leave himself an out, saying he reserves the right to review, revoke and/or modify his determination. Sgt. Wiegert lobbies for the group “Show Me Cannabis.”
