Animation continues to be almost a sure thing at the movie box office. Two of the top five films from the long holiday weekend were sequels to previous animated hits. “Despicable Me 2” clobbered the competition with clever humor that appealed to adults as well as kids. It took in $82.5 million for the weekend which kept it in the top spot. “Monsters University” came in fourth with a healthy gross of $19.6 million, which gave it a total of $216.1 million for three weeks in release.
The much-anticipated film from Disney, “The Lone Ranger,” fought off lukewarm reviews to finish in second place with $29.4 million, which was less than what was expected. Word of mouth will now determine if “The Lone Ranger “will live up to its expected potential.
The cops as buddies film “The Heat” took in $25 million which put it in third place. “World War Z” was fifth taking in $18.2 million. For the rest of the box office results, click on the link below.
