ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Missouri Lottery ticket sales have broken all previous records once again by exceeding $1.1 billion during the 2013 fiscal year, which ended June 30.
Total unaudited sales were $43.7 million or nearly 4 percent higher than the last fiscal year, marking the fourth consecutive year of increases.
“We are so elated to reach this level of sales,” says May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery, in a news release. “I want to thank our players, our retailers and our employees for helping us reach this milestone.”
Reardon says there were many factors that played a part in this year’s record sales.
“We implemented a new advertising campaign called ‘Play It Forward,’ which has been highly successful,” she says in the release. “We also had several high Powerball jackpots, more jackpot winners and our biggest jackpot winners ever – the Hills, who won a $293.7 million jackpot last November. All of these things contributed to higher sales.”
The Lottery awarded more than $1 billion in prizes, bringing the total prizes won since the Lottery began in 1986 to more than $10 billion.
There were also 32 Missouri Lottery tickets worth $1 million or more sold, which is eight more than last year, according to the release.
In addition to the jackpot prizes, five tickets worth $250,000 were sold in Mega Millions and 56 Show Me Cash players won top-prize jackpots worth a combined $10.2 million.
Retailers also had a record year, collecting more than $70.2 million selling Missouri Lottery products.
