KCI Awarded “Park Over the Highway” Contract

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The effort to link the Arch Grounds with downtown have taken a big step forward recently.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has awarded the contract to build the “lid” over I-70 to KCI Construction for $26.4 million.

MoDOT engineer Deanna Venker tells KMOX the contract clears the way for work to begin on the lid, or the official name the “Park Over the Highway,” next month.

Venker says the project will eventually replace the Market and Chestnut Street bridges with a unique, 280-foot-wide bridge that will serve as the base for the park.

“We’re going to start working down by the Martin Luther King bridge intersection and work to reroute traffic to be able to come from the south through the intersection at Martin Luther King to enter back on to the interstate,” Venker says of the rerouting that will take place to accommodate the lid.

She says early next year traffic on Memorial Drive will be rerouted around the park. The Chestnut and Market Street bridges will be removed.

The project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2015.
