Craigslist Ad Showing Abused Dog in Belleville Deemed a Hoax

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) — It turns out a reported dog abuse case didn’t happen in Belleville, but half a world away.

Police started investigating the alleged abuse Monday evening after finding out about an ad on Craigslist.

The ad posted on the social media site’s Rants and Rave section showed a graphic photo of a critically injured dog with the headline “Keeping the peace in Belleville”.

After hours of investigating Belleville detectives announced Tuesday that they have tracked down a newspaper article from late 2011 out of Australia, which showed the same photo of the abused dog.

They determined the Craigslist posting was a hoax with no local connections.
