ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Crews working the next two days will connect the Missouri and Illinois sections of the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.

The work will be done in three stages, the first two of which happen Thursday with the final section at nine o’clock Friday morning.

Missouri Department of Transportation Project Director Randy Hitt says a lot of hard work and tons of material have gone into the massive effort, including 114,000 bolts and 15 million pounds of structural steel.

Hitt says MoDOT officials are keeping the milestone relatively low-key by design.

“We’re not going to have any speeches or anything like that but the last piece of structural steel is always the ceremonial piece and we’ll have some banners to commemorate,” he explained.

While you can’t step on the bridge itself, anyone wanting to witness this latest milestone for the project can get a good view on the Missouri side by taking Broadway to Mullanphy and driving out to the flood wall.
