New Illinois Law Protects Witnesses from Gang Retaliation

Greg Branson

ALTON, IL (KMOX) Illinois State Rep. Dan Beiser, D-Alton, says witnesses who testify against gang members will be better protected from retaliation under a measure signed into law earlier this month.
Beiser helped pass House Bill 1139, which directs the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority to provide financial assistance when necessary for the relocation of victims and witnesses who testify in gang-related cases.
Beiser says “One of the roadblocks facing law enforcement and prosecutors in breaking up gangs is a fear among witnesses that cooperating with law enforcement officials invites retribution from the gang.”
The measure received bipartisan support in the House and Senate, and the Illinois State’s Attorney Association.
