ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — The St. Louis Catholic Archdiocese is near the top of the list when it comes to the number of permanent deacons in the Church.
A deacon serves the Catholic Church in a variety of ways, including proclaiming the Gospel, assisting the priest during Mass and ministering at hospitals and nursing homes.
This new report from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops reports there are 276 permanent deacons in the St. Louis Archdiocese. That is the fifth highest total in the nation, just ahead of Atlanta.
Archdiocesan officials here say another 70 men are studying to become deacons with an expected 20 to be ordained next year.
The Galveston-Houston Archdiocese has the most deacons at 414.
