Matt Damon bringing equality to Earth in the year 2154 made it to the top of the movie box office. “Elysium” took in $30.5 million its opening weekend amidst the several new films that opened, a fact that held down individual grosses among the top five.
Jennifer Aniston as a stripper and Jason Sudeikis as a pot dealer in “We’re the Millers” survived bad notices and came in second over the weekend $25.5 million.
The new animated film from Disney, “Planes,” didn’t live up to expectations for what was expected and took in only $24 million, putting it in third place.
Another kids movie, “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” finished a disappointing fourth its opening weekend with $15.3 million.
“Two Guns” with Denzel Washington as an undercover drug agent came in fifth in only its second week in release with just $11 million. “Two Guns” is performing very poorly at the box office. It should be noted that in an unusual twist, the top four movies on this weekend’s list were all in their first weekend in release.
The big opening next weekend is “The Butler,” a film based on the real story of a man who worked in the White House for 34 years. It stars Forest Whitaker.
