GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOX) — A Centreville Illinois man has been charged in connection with a body found at Horseshoe Lake State Park.
The body of 20-year-old Dakota Jones of Cahokia was found early Sunday by fishermen.
First degree murder charges were filed Tuesday against 41-year-old Scottie Thompson.
Officials say Thompson and Jones met earlier in East St. Louis and that Thompson offered to give Jones a ride to meet a friend.
Police believe that Thompson beat Jones about the head with a blunt force object several hours later before placing his body into Horseshoe Lake.
State’s Attorney Gibbons described the murder as a senseless. “Our victim evidently trusted this person and had no reason to fear for his life. It appears to be a tragic, random act of violence.”
Thompson was on parole for a 1989 murder in St. Clair County.
