CDC: Alcohol Abuse Costs Missouri, Illinois Billions

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Billions of dollars are lost each year in Missouri and Illinois due to excessive alcohol use.

Dr. Robert Brewer with the Centers for Disease Control says excessive alcohol use cost Illinois $9.3 billion in 2006 and Missouri $4.4 billion. California saw the highest cost, $32 billion.

“70 percent of those costs were specifically due to binge drinking which is defined as four or more drinks on an occasion for a woman, five or more drinks on an occasion for a man,” Brewer explains.

The costs are added up from loss of workplace productivity, health care expenses, and other costs associated with drinking.

80,000 Americans die every year from drinking too much, costing a total of $223 billion.
