Alton Woman Charged in Monkey Attack

ALTON, Ill. (KMOX) — An Alton woman faces fines and up to 30 days in jail after her monkey bit a six year old boy at a public event in Godfrey last month.

The female Java Macaque monkey, named Nina, was at a public event June 2nd with her owner Kendra D. Hougland when she bit a 6-year-old boy.

Madison County Prosecutors said Monday Hougland took care of Nina, since August 30, 2012, but never legally owned her.

Hougland is charged with three counts of Unlawful Possession of a Primate, a Class C Misdemeanor.

Gibbons also plans to seek restitution for medical costs for the victim’s family as well as the costs incurred in caring for Nina.

“This was a difficult situation,” he stated. “I want to thank the St. Louis Zoo for their work not only as an organization that is dedicated to the well-being of wild animals, but also for being such a great community partner.”

Nina is at a rescue center in Kentucky and is now in the legal possession of the St. Louis Zoo.
