ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOX) - Traffic is flowing across the Blanchette Bridge without any hindrance this morning.

The Interstate 70 bridge connecting St. Louis County and St. Charles County opened over the weekend, more than two months ahead of schedule.

“Our contractor just had a really good schedule, very aggressive plan for how they were going to get the bridge redone and then they executed it,” Missouri Department of Transportation spokesperson Linda Wilson Horn says.

Mild weather helped but Horn says commuters can also thank themselves for the early re-opening.

“Kudos to the drivers for really listening to what was going on and trying to figure out other ways to get around,” she says. “Fortunately, we’re blessed with two other bridges so 370 and [Interstate] 64 are within a couple miles on either side so it gave good alternates for people.”

Work will continue underneath the bridge for a few months but any related lane closures would happen during off-peak hours.
