ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — The Cardinals announced Wednesday that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Michael Blazek from Memphis and optioned right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez to the triple-A club. Martinez was considered an option to start for the Redbirds in the series finale with the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on Sunday.

This move lines Joe Kelly up for the start. He will get the usual four days of rest after starting in the 6-1 win on Tuesday night.

Blazek, 24, has appeared in 10 games for the Cardinals this season, striking out 10 batters in his 8.2 innings pitched. He was 1-2 with a 2.77 ERA and two saves in 19 games (26.0 IP) for Memphis.

Martinez returns to a Memphis club that is now just 1.0 game back of Omaha in the Pacific Coast League American Northern Division with six games remaining. Martinez, 21, gained his first Major League win on Monday (Aug. 26) against the Reds while working 2.0 innings in relief during the 8-6 come-from-behind win.

Blazek wears uniform # 67.
