COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) – A spokesman for a southwestern Illinois racetrack says two jockeys were injured when racehorses collided and one of animals had to be euthanized.
Fairmount Park spokesman Jon Sloane says the accident happened Tuesday as the six horses turned in to the final stretch of the race at the track near Collinsville, east of St. Louis.
One of the horses, a 5-year-old bay mare named Shakkarena, fell because of a leg injury, injuring that jockey. The horse was euthanized by injection.
Another horse escaped injury after colliding with Shakkarena, but the jockey riding atop her was also hurt.
Both jockeys were taken to hospitals. Their medical statuses were not immediately available Wednesday.
