ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The bishop of most of this country’s Maronite Catholics has spoken out against any U.S. military action in Syria.

The Maronite Catholic Church is an ancient Eastern rite of Catholicism based in Lebanon with many members in Syria. Bishop Robert Shaheen at St. Raymond’s Cathedral in St. Louis represents about 43,000 Maronite Catholics in 34 states.

“No one wants war, no one wants to have the United States go in there, and I don’t see any good coming out of it,” he said.

Bishop Shaheen says there has to be a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict.

“I’m not a politician, I don’t have the answer, certainly, but I just think that is not the answer, to blow up more people, that’s all,” he said.

He is joining St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson in calling on local Catholics to observe a day of prayer and fasting for peace in Syria on Saturday.
