Bank Robbery Suspect Surrenders After Four-Hour Standoff

NEW ATHENS, IL (KMOX) – Charges are pending against a suspect accused of Friday’s bank robbery and standoff with a police SWAT team in New Athens, Illinois.
Police say the unarmed suspect held up the U-S Bank at 1100 Spotsylvania St. shortly before 9:30 a-m. He then walked to a nearby apartment complex on Phillips Street. Police cleared residents from the area, and a nearby elementary school was put on lockdown for about four hours.
The suspect surrendered around 2:30 p-m Friday, and he was taken to the St. Clair County Jail.
His name has not been released. Charges are pending.
