ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – As it prepares for a new Broadway Series of shows for the upcoming season, the Fox Theatre in St. Louis has a newly-restored auditorium ceiling to show-off.
Ed Magee was the project supervisor for EverGreene Architectural Arts, “As it was touched-up (during previous painting restorations), it never was cleaned. They touched it up to dirty colors. So, when you clean them, those colors stand out like a sore thumb. We had to go in there and tone it all in and make it look presentable.”
Fox Theatre owning partner Mary Strauss says the partners are thrilled they were finally able to give the ceiling the proper restoration it deserved, “To see all the intricate work, the colors and the jewels, we knew we had jewels up there, but they were dull. Now, I think you’ll walk in the auditorium and notice they are shining.”
Ed Magee says says his workers made a surprise discovery while they were cleaning and restoring the ceiling paint, “One of the big decorative tassels was missing. When we got up there, we noticed, and nobody knew it was gone. Someone had painted the bottom of it to look like it was there.”
The theatre was dark this summer as scaffolding covered the auditorium from floor to ceiling.
It took about 55 working days to complete the project.
The pricetag was not disclosed.
