Washington University 14th in ‘Best Colleges’ Rankings
ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - U.S. News & World Report has released its annual ranking of universities and colleges for 2014.
Five area schools were ranked among the top 200 universities nationwide. Washington University came in at number 14, the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign at 41, University of Missouri – Columbia at 97, Saint Louis University at 101, and Maryville University at 161.
Editor and Chief Content Officer Brian Kelly says a lot of factors are considered.
“We look at the incoming students, how good are they? We look at graduation rates, really critical,” he explained. “Freshman retention, how many come in and how many stay? At a lot of schools, that’s a big cut off. If you fall off freshman year, something’s wrong. Either they’re not admitting the right kids or they’re not taking care of them while they’re there.”
Truman State University in Kirksville is listed as the tenth-best regional university in the Midwest. Webster University is number 21, Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville number 42, and McKendree University in Lebanon number 68. SEMO in Cape Girardeau tied with William Woods in Fulton at number 86 while Fontbonne University comes in at number 102.
