Man Arrested, Officer Hurt, After Meth Lab Found in Sunset Hills Motel

SUNSET HILLS, Mo. (KMOX) — A man is in custody and a police officer hospitalized after a meth lab was discovered in a St. Louis County motel room.

Sunset Hills Police Chief William LaGrand told KMOX officers first went to the Econo Lodge in the 3700 block of South Lindbergh Boulevard for a domestic dispute early Thursday. The officer arrested the aggressor, but when he returned to interview the victim he saw something suspicion.

LaGrand said a man was sitting outside another room cutting open batteries and smoke was leaking out a nearby room.

“The officer saw smoke coming out of a partially open door. When he pushed the door open a cloud of some sort of vapor and fumes came out at him,” said LaGrand.

LaGrand said the suspect had apparently forgotten an ingredient and was heating his meth mixture in the microwave.

The officer was taken to a hospital, treated and released.

Those in nearby rooms were evacuated while firefighters and drug investigators cleared out the room.

An investigation continues and charges have not been filed.
