Real Loud, Real Fast: NHRA Fanfest Comes To Gateway
MADISON, Ill. (KMOX) – Billing itself as the “World’s Fastest Tailgate Party”, the National Hot Rod Association brings all of its loudest, shiniest and speediest toys to town this weekend.
It’s the 2nd annual Fanfest at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Illinois.
“We’ve been preparing for this all summer,” GMP owner Curtis Francois tells KMOX News. “We’re trying to make sure that when fans show up at the track that we really exceed their expectations.”
He says what folks can expect this weekend are some of the fastest things on four wheels, with dragsters pumping out up to 10,000 horsepower and reaching top speeds well north of 300 mph.
“We are undoubtedly the world’s fastest motor sport,” according to NHRA announcer Alan Reinhart. “Last week in Dallas top speed was a blistering 325-and-a-half miles per hour. Nobody else even comes close.”
Among those willing to strap herself into a rocket on wheels and pull up to 6 g’s at launch over and over again is Pro Stock driver Erica Enders.
“To be honest I say a prayer every time before I get in the race car,” Enders tells KMOX News. “I will not go down the track without saying a prayer, but it’s one of those things that I put in the back of my mind and I focus on the task at hand.”
Qualifying runs all day Friday and racing goes throughout the weekend.
