ST LOUIS (KMOX) - The Pirates scored five runs off of Cardinals starter Lance Lynn and Pittsburgh rookie Gerrit Cole threw six masterful innings of one-run ball, giving up just two hits and striking out five, as the Pirates beat the Cardinals 7-1 to even up their NLDS Series at one game apiece.
Lynn surrendered five earned runs on seven hits over four and a third innings of work. In his last three starts against Pittsburgh, Lynn has given up 25 hits and 16 earned runs over 13 2/3 innings pitched.
The Pirates scored one in the second, two in the third and two in the fifth against the Cardinals starter. Third baseman Pedro Alvarez hit his second home run of the series in the two-run third and finished 2-4, driving in two runs.
The Cardinals managed only one run on four hits a day after scoring nine runs on 10 hits in a Game 1 win win. Yadier Molina connected on a fifth inning home run to make the score 5-1, and Carlos Beltran and Matt Adams each doubled for the Redbirds. Molina was the only Cardinal to reach third base in the loss.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny used seven pitchers in the loss, including Shelby Miller, who pitched the eighth inning, giving up a home run to Pittsburgh leadoff man Starling Marte.
With the series shifting to Pittsburgh, Joe Kelly will start Sunday’s Game Three against Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano. Matheny announced before the game that rookie Michael Wacha will get the nod to start Game Four.
