ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Approximately 40 percent of pregnant women in the United States have some form of periodontal disease and that has local OB-GYN concerned.
Dr. Scott Williams at the SSM Medical Group says pregnant women shouldn’t be afraid to go to the dentist and receive x-rays or teeth cleanings, they’re safe during pregnancy.
In fact, Williams says you could receive 50,000 shielded dental x-rays during a pregnancy before causing any harm.
“The radiation isn’t a concern, the instruments and fluoride isn’t a concern, and it is a concern to not have good dental health,” he said.
Williams says mothers-to-be with poor dental health end up with more problems during pregnancy, have far more pre-term labor problems, and experience poorer pregnancy outcomes. He recommends women receive a complete dental checkup as soon as they find out they are pregnant.
