ST. LOUIS (AP) – The mass transit operator for the St. Louis region will soon stop accepting certain coins and currency for buses.

Starting next Monday, Metro will no longer accept pennies, 50-cent coins or $2 bills as payment.

Metro is replacing its 20-year-old fare boxes. It will now require exact change or a valid Metro pass or ticket.

Boxes will continue to accept $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills along with nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar coins.

The new technology will help identify counterfeit bills and foreign coins.
