ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) - A local surgeon says his practice of dealing with varicose veins is giving way to the new lucrative practice of tattoo removal.

Dr. Norman Bein of Vein Specialties says tattoo removal has grown from one percent of his business to over 30 percent.

“At each treatment we are exploding particle of tattoo ink into multiple tiny pieces that are that much rapidly absorbed by the lymphatic system,” Bein explained. Patients can expect the removal process to take 6 to 8 weeks.

He says that some of his patients are trying to get into the military, and others are like Shannon Volkner who at 30, felt embarrassed by the tattoo she got at 18.

As you might have heard, tattoo removal is quite painful. Volkner found that out the hard way.

“It was the worst pain I’ve ever felt getting laser tattoo removal with no anesthetic,” she said.

But Dr. Bein has come up with a process that lessens the pain.

“I inject a local anesthetic into the area so that treatment itself is quite pleasant,” he said.
