ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The nation’s hospitals, including dozens in the St. Louis area, have received their annual Healthgrades checkup.

Healthgrades.com’s Evan Marks says they looked at the mortality rates of St. Louis-area hospitals when it comes to certain procedures and conditions and found some big differences.

Take heart attacks for example: “The risks of mortality range from a low of 1.4 percent to 11.5 percent on the high end, which is across these 22 different hospitals,” Marks said. “That’s an eight times difference or eight-fold difference in the rate of mortality, which is extraordinary.”

The difference is even more drastic when it comes to strokes. The mortality rate ranges from two percent at the best hospital in the area compared to 25.3 percent at the worst.

For complications from a total knee replacement, the risk varied here from 3.5 percent to 17 percent, depending on the hospital.
