The St. Louis Cardinals’ Wikipedia page was vandalized on Monday morning.
Someone posted a sexually explicit description of the team around 11:30 a.m. The incident was corrected within minutes, but a spokesperson for the Cardinals tells KMOX, that Google’s search engine pulled in the inappropriate description before the correction was made.
Ron Watermon of the Cardinals says because of the automated crawler software Google uses, the incorrect Wiki description kept showing up in Google searches.
The Cardinals did reach out to Google directly and they resolved the issue. Watermon says the Google team was very responsive once the issue was brought to their attention.
Anyone can write or make changes to Wikipedia articles, except the website says, in limited cases where editing is restricting to prevent disruption or vandalism.
