ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) - The mobile payments system, Square, invented by two St. Louis men, will soon be available for local taxi drivers to use.

The payment system which allows credit cards swipes by iPhone or iPad from anywhere is very popular in large metropolitan areas, like San Francisco, Portland, Orlando, Miami, and Seattle.

Square spokesman Aaron Zamost said taxi drivers exemplify merchants who can benefit from Square.

“Square is actually perfect for taxi driver because it originated as a way to accept credit card on the go,” he said.

The Metropolitan Taxicab Commission previously outlawed its drivers from using the credit card technology, even fining them if caught.

St. Louisans Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey cofounded Square.
