ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) - A new scam circulating the St. Louis area targeting businesses has claimed its first victim.

Police say over the past few days three Maplewood businesses have received a called from a person claiming to be from the electric company. They tell the business owner that they’re late on their bill and if they don’t pay right away their power will be shut off.

Authorities say the scammers then tell the owner they need to acquire a $1,000 Green Dot Moneypak, which is a reloadable debit card, then call them back with the security code.

So far, of the three businesses contacted, one has fallen for the scam.

The Better Business Bureau warns consumers to “never give a MoneyPak serial number to anyone you don’t know.”
