Executive Edge: Robert Allen of American Airlines
Robert D. Allen is currently flying as a First Officer with American Airlines where he has worked since joining the company in 1999. He has been qualified on the Boeing 757/767 and the McDonnell Douglas MD80 aircraft with American, and also holds a type rating in the B737 aircraft.
Robert retired from the United States Air Force in April, 2012, after 27 years of combined active and reserve duty. Lt Col Allen was commissioned in the United States Navy in November, 1984, and in the United States Air Force Reserve in March, 2000. As a military pilot Lt Col Allen has earned Wings as a carrier qualified Naval Aviator and as a Command rated Air Force pilot. He has flown the F-14, F/A-18, and F-16 in an operational environment accumulating over 2000 hours of time in fighter aircraft. He is a graduate of the Navy’s Fighter Weapon’s School, Test Pilot School, Landing Signals Officer School, and Squadron Safety Officer’s School in addition to the United States Air Force’s Air Command and Staff College and Air War College. He has served in all aspects of flight test including operational, developmental, research, and production test flying. Lt Col Allen commanded the 170th Fighter Squadron of the Illinois Air National Guard, completed three operational deployments as a carrier based Naval Aviator and three deployments as an Air Force fighter pilot including combat deployments in support of Operations Southern Watch and Iraqi Freedom. His last assignment was to United States Transportation Command as an Operations Chief in the Deployment and Distribution Operations Center.
Robert has a Bachelor of Science in Aviation from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, a Master’s of Science in Aviation Safety from the University of Central Missouri, and an Executive Master’s in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis where he earned the C. William Emory distinguished graduate award for scholastic and leadership excellence.
Robert lives in St. Charles County with his wife of 26 years, Cynthia A. Allen. He enjoys virtually all outdoor activities including golf, skiing, scuba, jogging, biking, and horseback riding.
