ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Wanted: St. Louis area veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) after serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

An Occupational Therapy lab at Washington University School of Medicine is recuiting participants for a study on the effects of horses in a therapy setting, according to third-year student Julia Sanders, “They might be riding on a horse. They might just be grooming, just hanging out with a horse. It has been shown that horses can really calm down the effects of PTSD.”

Sanders says some V.A. hospitals have used so-called “hippotherapy” in treating combat veterans with brain injuries, but there’s not much data available on the results.

If you or someone you know might be interested in participating you can call Dr. Tim Shurtleff at 314-289-4362 or e-mail: ot-hippotherapy@wusm.wustl.edu
