Methane Gas Leak Forces Evacuations in Swansea

SWANSEA, Ill. (KMOX) – Several stores in the Swansea Plaza were evacuated Wednesday afternoon due to a methane gas leak.

Schnuck’s spokeswoman Lori Willis told KMOX, crews were shoring up an underground mine on the parking lot, in the 2600 block of Illinois Street, when methane gas starting escaping.

“Drill censors alerted contractors that they had tapped into a naturally occurring air-pocket that contain methane gas,” she said.

A safety engineer on site explains methane is lighter than air and the gas is starting to dissipate.

As of 5:00 p.m. Schnucks was the only business open in the Swansea Plaza.

No injuries have been reported.
