Gay Marriage Q&A Forums To Be Held Across Illinois
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (IRN) – Same-sex couples looking to get married next year have plenty of questions.
A series of marriage forums around the state may provide the answers. With Illinois becoming the 16th state to legalize same sex marriage, couples are now trying to understand when and where they can get married.
Bernard Cherkasov, Chief Executive at Equality Illinois, says for example, many couples who received civil unions don’t know they have to file paper work to convert that union into a marriage.
“It will not automatically be done for them,” Cherkasov said. “So on June 1, those certificates will become available, and couples will be able to go to a county clerk without paying a fee, and their civil unions will be converted to marriages, retroactive to their civil union date.”
