CREVE COEUR, Mo. (KMOX) – Full service trash pickup will remain free in the city of Creve Coeur.

Monday night the city Council voted five to 4 not to charge additional money for backyard trash pickup…but the new contract with Republic has not been finalized yet.

Many residents say this helps elderly or disabled residents who aren’t able to pull their trash cans around to the front of the yard.

The council had considered charging anyone who wanted that service $15 a month.

In 2010 residents passed a sales tax initiative to help pay for trash service. One resident said that that should be enough. “I think we already pay for it in advance with the tax that we voted for a couple of years ago.”

The city responded that that quarter-cent sales tax increase was not specifically ear-marked for trash service.

The new contract that the council approved has the city spending a million dollars a year on backyard pickup.
