LECLAIRE, Iowa (KMOX) – Coast Guard officials in St. Louis are still working to contain oil leaking into the Mississippi River far upstream.
The 144-foot Stephen L. Colby towboat struck something below the water near LeClaire, Iowa Monday afternoon causing it to sink.
Nine crew members were able to make it to safety.
The Coast Guard says that about 90,000 gallons of diesel fuel are on board the Colby.
The Captain of the Port closed the Mississippi River from mile marker 493 to 501 to allow for cleanup and salvage operations.
