EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - The coroner in southwestern Illinois’ Madison County says a man killed during a Thanksgiving Day house fire has been identified.

Coroner Steve Nonn says 71-year-old Edwin Winkler Sr.’s body was found by firefighters in an upstairs bedroom of the victim’s rural Edwardsville home.

Nonn says Winkler was identified through dental records. An autopsy showed Winkler sustained smoke inhalation. But a precise ruling on his death is pending the outcome of lab screenings of his blood samples.

Authorities say the blaze was reported shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday by a Winkler neighbor.

It’s not yet clear what sparked the fire, though Nonn has said the origin doesn’t appear to be suspicious.

Funeral arrangements are pending by Herr Funeral Home in Collinsville.
