COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) A horse gave his owner a scare after falling into a central Missouri swimming pool in freezing weather.

The Columbia Missourian (http://bit.ly/Jevg9Y ) reports that the gelding, named Hershey, escaped Friday night. Owner Melody Whitworth quickly called 911 after the horse tumbled through the tarp of the pool on her neighbor’s Hallsville property.

She says rescuers used fire hoses to hoist up the horse’s head. Crews also cut the remaining straps that held the tarp in place and used the tarp to guide Hershey to the shallow end. Eventually, Hershey was able to walk up the pool’s stairs.

Boone County Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Gale Blomenkamp said that although the horse was in the water for 30 to 40 minutes, he was doing well. Whitworth called the experience “traumatic.”
